A riser (also called a platform, tier or seating deck) is simply a raised section of floor that a row of seats sits on. In a commercial cinema every row steps up behind the one in front — that stepping is what lets you see the screen past the audience ahead of you. At home the same principle applies the moment you put a second row of seats behind the first.

The problem it solves is the sightline: the straight line from a viewer's eyes to the bottom of the screen. If that line is blocked by the headrest of the seat in front, the back-row viewer loses the lower portion of the image and spends the film craning around. Raising the back row lifts every rear eye-line clear of the seats ahead. Get the geometry right and the room reads as a purpose-built cinema; get it wrong and it feels like a lounge with too many sofas. 2. When you actually need a riser

The honest answer for most rooms: only from the second row. A single row of recliners facing a wall-mounted screen almost never benefits from a platform — everyone already has a clear view. You need a riser when one or more of the following is true:

You have a second row (or more).
This is the main trigger. Any row behind the front row needs lifting so its sightline clears the headrests in front.

The screen sits low.
If the bottom of the screen is close to seated eye level, back rows are blocked sooner and need more rise to compensate.

Rows are close together.
The shorter the gap between rows, the steeper the sightline angle and the taller the riser has to be.

You use tall or high-backed seating.
Power-headrest and high-back recliners block more of the view, so the row behind needs extra lift.

A quick test: sit in the front row, then have someone of similar height sit directly behind at your planned spacing. If they can see the bottom edge of the screen over your headrest, you may get away without a riser. If they cannot, you need one — and the maths below tells you how tall.


3. Riser height: the rise-per-row maths

The single most useful figure is rise per row — how much higher each row sits than the one in front. For home cinemas this lands between 25 cm and 40 cm, with around 30 cm being the dependable default. The exact number depends on three things: the distance between rows, the height of the seat backs, and how low the screen sits.

Longer row spacing needs less height.
The further apart the rows, the shallower the sightline angle, so a lower riser clears the seats in front.

Low screens need more height.
If the bottom of the image is near seated eye level, add height so rear viewers see the whole picture.

Don't exceed roughly 40 cm in one step.
Taller than that becomes awkward and unsafe to step up; split it across two shallower tiers instead.

4. Riser depth: recline, walkway and safety margin

Height gets the attention, but depth is where most home builds go wrong. The platform has to hold the full reclined footprint of the seat and leave a safe walkway behind it. Skimp on depth and either the chairs cannot recline fully or people have to squeeze past a fully extended footrest in the dark.

Measure the reclined depth, not the upright depth.
A recliner can grow 40–50 cm longer when the footrest is out; that is the number the platform must accommodate.

Add a walkway behind the row.
Leave at least 50–60 cm of clear floor behind the reclined seat so people can pass without stepping over legs.

Keep the front edge clear.
Never let a reclined footrest overhang the step edge — set the front row of seats back from the lip.

5. Building your own vs a pre-made platform

There are two routes: a carpentered platform built into the room, or a modular pre-made riser system that bolts together. Each suits a different situation.

A built-in timber platform is the gold standard.
A framed structure of joists and ply, decked and carpeted, is rigid, silent underfoot and can hide cabling, subwoofers and step lighting. It is permanent and needs proper carpentry.

Modular pre-made risers are faster and reversible.
Interlocking platform sections are ideal for rented rooms or if you may reconfigure later, though they rarely match a built-in for finish and silence.

Whichever you choose, decouple it.
A hollow platform can boom; fill voids, brace generously and consider isolation pads so the structure doesn't resonate with the subwoofer.

If you are handy, a timber frame is well within reach of a competent DIYer. If you are not, this is worth handing to a joiner — a squeaky or resonant riser will annoy you every screening.


6. Safety: steps, edge lighting and rails

A cinema is watched in the dark, so a raised platform is a trip hazard unless you design against it. Three features do the heavy lifting.

Consistent step height.
Every step onto and around the riser should be the same height (ideally under 20 cm) so feet learn the rhythm; mismatched steps cause falls.

LED edge lighting.
Recessed strips along each step nose keep the level change visible without spilling light onto the screen — the most effective single safety measure in a dark room.

A rail where it counts.
For tall risers, steps to one side, or households with children or older viewers, a discreet handrail is well worth it.

The riser and the seating are one system — design them together. The seat you choose sets the platform depth (through its reclined footprint) and influences the riser height (through its back height), so pick the seating early.
